Modern Foreign Languages – curriculum information

At Wansbeck Primary School we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills, including the key skills of speaking and listening, and extends their knowledge of how language works. Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.

Our current MFL taught is Spanish, however we strive to provide children with opportunities to experience a range of other languages. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children’s primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written Spanish, confidence to speak in Spanish with others and know how important other languages can be in their future.

Lessons across Key Stage 2 support the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening in Spanish. The curriculum is delivered using Language Angels; a resource to support teaching and learning of languages. Children are taught to listen attentively to spoken language and respond, joining in with songs, rhymes and games. We encourage a problem-solving approach, giving children opportunities to work out language use for themselves in a risk-taking and supportive environment. ICT is used where appropriate to enhance teaching and learning.

In Key Stage 2, each year group has a 60-minute lesson of Spanish each week.
