PE
PE – Curriculum Information
PE and physical activity is a big part of our everyday routine at Wansbeck. As well as completing the daily mile and planning physical activity into afternoon sessions, each class has two hours of PE scheduled into their weekly timetable. During these sessions, our children are taught fundamental movement skills across games, gymnastics, dance and OAA as well as a variety of life skills through engaging and challenging activities.
Personal skills are developed through self-reflection and taking responsibility for setting personal goals.
Social skills are enhanced through team activities and teaching pupils how to respond to feedback in a positive way as well as how to lead others successfully.
Cognitive skills are built upon through self-exploration of own performance and working through tactics in game situations.
Creative skills are promoted through creating own games and movements as well as demonstrating how to change tactics in a game in response to an opponent.
Physical skills are established through transferring taught FUNS skills to different activities and performing them with increased control and coordination.
Finally, health and fitness is taught through understanding the need for and benefits of exercise leading on to pupils planning their own fitness programmes.
We are also encouraging our children to develop these key sport and life skills during ‘inhouse’ sports tournaments. Every six weeks, children are placed into their Wansbeck TEAM groups and play a variety of sports in a round robin tournament within their key stage. These sports tournaments help develop the children’s sporting skills, encourage physical activity, and promote an overall enjoyment of taking part in sport. At the end of each tournament, we hold a presentation for the winning team and prizes for ‘sportsman’ and ‘sportswoman’ of the tournament.
