Science – Curriculum Information
At Wansbeck, we aim for children to gain an understanding of the world around them and through covering the disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics in Science. This is done in a way that stimulate the children’s own curiosity as to why things happen the way that they do and allows them to develop independently using a range of skills.
We offer all children from Foundation stage to Key Stage 2 the chance to:
- Carry out investigations that stimulate creative thought and allow them to ask and answer their own scientific questions.
- Develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of important scientific ideas, processes and skills and give the children a variety of opportunities to relate these to everyday experiences.
- Explore British values and look at tolerance at other people’s thoughts and opinions in Science.
- Develop scientific enquiry skills to allow children to plan, safely carry out and evaluate investigations of their own designs using a range of resources and equipment appropriate for their stage of learning.
This is done by following the national curriculum across a two year cycle that is taught within phases. It has been designed in a way that allows for progression of knowledge and skills to be built on over time.
The impact of the subject on the children of Wansbeck, is that it:
- Promotes and encourages curiosity and allows them to feel valued in their thoughts and opinions.
- Develop excited and enthusiastic learners.
- Gives the children hands on and practical experiences
- Develops enjoyment through questioning and exploring interests.
- Allows for children to build on their science capital through enrichment – (STEM projects, visits and workshops)
- Creates confident children who can use a wide range of scientific vocabulary in context.
- Creates independence in skills that can be transferred across all subject areas.
