Design & Technology – curriculum information

The aim of Design and Technology at Wansbeck Primary School, coincides with Art; bringing the topics to life by creating interesting and appealing projects in which the children can explore, practise and master new skills.

This begins in EYFS, where children have the opportunity to use their imagination to create models from a range of available materials. The importance of this allows children to express their own thoughts, feelings and ideas in order to lay the foundation for a journey in D&T which promotes the children’s views. D&T projects link closely to topic work and allows children to experiment with problem-solving, building structures and the use of materials.

In Design and Technology, children work on these key areas:

  • technical skills; textiles, mechanics, electricals
  • design
  • make
  • evaluate


The journey of D&T develops throughout year group to ensure children build on skills each Key Stage.

For example in Food technology:
Key Stage 1 children research, design and make fruit smoothies linked to their topic work , progressing in Lower Key Stage 2 where children plan, prepare and cook a Viking meal.

At Upper Key Stage 2 level, children plant and grow their own food and use this to design and prepare a wartime menu that is served to parents at a special showcase event.

At Wansbeck we take pride in our Design and Technology work and often share this with our parents, the community and the wider world, through our blogs and social media account.
