Key Stage 1
Welcome to Key Stage One
Hello and welcome to Key Stage One!
There are two classes in Key Stage One. We have a Year 1 class taught by Mrs Gill and a Year 2 class taught by Mrs Hill.
In Key Stage One, we work really hard to develop each child’s social, emotional and academic skills. We have adopted a collaborative approach to teaching and learning across the phase whilst ensuring there is a clear progression of knowledge and skills from Year 1 into Year 2. We do this through our curriculum work and through fostering each child’s curiosity and engagement in their learning.
We have a structured and busy morning which includes core subjects such as Phonics, Reading, Writing and Maths. In the afternoon, we have a range of activities which challenge the children through our engaging curriculum. These activities include Dance, P.E, RE, Science, Music, computing and our topic lessons (History, Geography, Art and Design Technology). Something which is very important to us is at Wansbeck is developing our emotional selves. Throughout our PHSE curriculum and daily routines, we teach the importance of healthy relationships, health education and managing our feelings.
Reading is a fundamental skill that the children need throughout their school life because it supports them in all areas of the curriculum. In Year 1 we use the Little Wandle Systematic synthetic program which allows children to develop their decoding and comprehension skills, as well as reading fluently with prosody. In Year 2 we move onto colour banded reading books that again enable the children to continue to practice and improve their reading skills learnt in Year 1. The children are expected to take responsibility for their own home reading books. Please encourage your children to read each day and to remember to bring their home reading book back into school.
